Presidents Cup

September is all about international rivalries for golf fans, and this year brings the excitement of the Presidents Cup. Held every two years, this competition pits the top golfers from the United States against an International Team in a showdown filled with thrilling matches, dramatic moments, and clutch shots. Whether you’re cheering from the sidelines or watching from home, here’s everything you need to know about the 2024 Presidents Cup.

Presidents Cup 2024: Event Overview

The Presidents Cup is a unique team competition that brings together elite golfers to compete not for individual glory, but for national pride. Unlike the Ryder Cup, which is a battle between the U.S. and Europe, the Presidents Cup features the U.S. Team and a group of international players from around the world (excluding Europe). Over four intense days, these athletes clash in a series of matches, with every shot carrying the weight of their nation’s hopes.

Presidents Cup 2024: The Venue

This year, the Presidents Cup returns to the iconic Royal Montreal Golf Club in Quebec, Canada. Established in 1873, Royal Montreal is the oldest golf club in North America and has a rich history of hosting prestigious events, including multiple Canadian Opens and the 2007 Presidents Cup. During that memorable ’07 tournament, the U.S. Team, captained by Jack Nicklaus, triumphed over the Gary Player-led International Team with a score of 19.5 to 14.5.

One of the most unforgettable moments from that year was when Woody Austin took an unexpected plunge into the pond on the 14th hole – a lighthearted highlight in an otherwise intense competition.

The 2024 Presidents Cup will be contested on Royal Montreal’s renowned Blue Course, originally designed by the legendary Dick Wilson. Fans can anticipate plenty of drama on signature holes like the par-4 14th, a drivable hole with a narrow, boomerang-shaped green that wraps around a pond, adding risk to the reward. The par-3 17th will also test nerves, with a tee shot that must carry over a pond that also hugs the right side of the green.

Presidents Cup 2024: The Format

The Presidents Cup is played over four days, from September 26th to the 29th, with a total of 30 matches:

  • Sept 26, Thursday: Five matches total, four-ball (best ball) or foursomes (alternate shot)
  • Sept 27, Friday: Five matches total, foursomes or fourball (the opposite of Thursday’s format)
  • Sept 28, Saturday: Eight matches total, four-ball and foursomes split the morning and afternoon
  • Sept 29, Sunday: Twelve matches total, singles

Each match in the Presidents Cup is worth one point, with a total of 30 points up for grabs. The first team to reach 15.5 points claims the Cup. However, if the teams are tied at 15 points each, the Presidents Cup is shared – a key distinction from the Ryder Cup. In the Ryder Cup, a tie results in the defending champion retaining the trophy, but in the Presidents Cup, both teams share the honor.
